VIPPERloid, written as VIPPALOID (ビッパロイド) in Japanese, is the colloquial term used to refer to a group of UTAU created by VIPPERs, users of the online community board, 2Channel also known as VIP@2ch.

Not all VIPPERloids were conceptualized as pranks some were just made on the VIP@2ch forum.

Etymology

VIPPALOID (ビッパロイド) is the combination of two terms VIPPA (ビッパ) and the suffix LOID (ロイド). VIPPA is another way of saying VIPPER (ヴィッパー) and refers to the people who created the characters. LOID is taken from the word VOCALOID and comes from the fact that the first few notable VIPPERloids were intended to bait people into thinking they were VOCALOIDs. The word was first documented on pixiv dictionary around March 9, 2010.

VIPPERloid is the English reading of the word. Taken from VIPPER + the suffix loid from Vocaloid. The lower-case -loid originates from a common way of writing VOCALOID, with the first letter capitalized and the rest in lower case.

History

The first to be created was Kasane Teto, who was made as a fake VOCALOID2 to fool people into thinking she was the newest addition in Crypton Future Media's "Character Vocal" series as a prank in early 2008. She was released on April 1st alongside a voicebank for the UTAU engine. A few months after Teto's creation, a fan-derivative based on her was born, Kasane Ted around October 2008. Ted would later on be adopted by TWINDRILL as an official derivative for Teto in October 2012, thus securing himself a place among the popular VIPPERloids despite not being created on VIP@2ch himself and lacking a voicebank of his own.

The next prank character to be made was Yokune Ruko in the latter half of 2008. Coincidentally, around the time Ruko was being planned, CRYPTON FUTURE MEDIA released the demo song of their newest addition to the "Character Vocal" lineup, CV03. This was later incorporated into Ruko's backstory being the "rejected CV03". Due to complications regarding Ruko's masculine voicebank, there was a leftover voicebank after Ruko's release during November. This voicebank was given a new original character profile taking inspiration from Ruko and given the name Rook. Rook would later on release on the first anniversary of Ruko's release as the first non-prank VIPPERloid.

Namine Ritsu was conceptualized and made during the latter half of 2009. However unlike the previous VIPPERloids, Ritsu's prank videos on NicoNicoDouga were not sung by an UTAU voicebank but by two volunteers whose voices were edited in post to have a sound similar to an UTAU voicebank. The first volunteer sang the first two demos while the second volunteer sung Ritsu's third demo, a showcase of Ritsu's "Whisper Append". The voice of the first volunteer was chosen to be used for the creation of Ritsu's first voicebank which released around October 2009. While the voice of the second volunteer would later on be used on a new original character, Ooka Miko, who would release around December of the same year.

Sukone Tei's character was made during 2010.

• VIPPERloids are often created with a short profile as an initial proposal that other VIPPERs can build upon or add on to.
  • Teto's is "31 years old, Sex: Chimera"
  • Ruko's is "197cm, 12 years old, Sex: 90% Male, 10% Female"
  • Ritsu's is "6 year old Okama that weighs 25 tons"
  • Tei's is "A Yandere with the habit of saying die and masturbating anywhere"
• Certain VIPPERloids were not made as pranks but rather as characters as a response to a certain event.
  • Hinomoto Oniko was made as a response to the increasing usage of a Japanese slur by Chinese netizens following a fishing boat collision incident nearby a Japanese island that was under international dispute. The slur in question dates back to the World War II and is the basis for Oniko's name by translating the hanzi used in the slur using Japanese readings.
  • Erusalem was made to bring awareness to the Middle East conflict and discourage the willful ignorance of those living in peaceful countries.
  • ISIS-chan was made as a response to the propaganda of the Islamic terrorism group ISIS, in the hopes of flooding google searches
• Before colloquial use of the term VIPPERloid, some characters were originally labelled a different term when they were first released.
  • Teto's is BOUCALOID (某CALOID, tl. so-and-so-caloid), a pun based on her prank status which is phonetically similar with VOCALOID.
  • Ruko's and Ritsu's are VOCAROID, a deliberate misspelling of VOCALOID.
    • Ruko being made by CRIPTON.
    • Ritsu being made by CRVIPTON/CRYPTOM.
  • Oniko's is OGRELOID (オーガロイド), referring to her being an "Ogre".
  • Hibiki was often referred to as SCATLOID (スカトロイド), referring to her poop theming.
  • Nero's is BOUKALOID (暴歌ロイド, tl. Tyrantloid), a pun based on her personality which is phonetically similar with VOCALOID.
  • Kei's is VOROCAROID (ボロカロイド), which is a common misspelling of VOCALOID in Japanese, in place of a vowel extender (ー), an extra "ro" (ロ) is present.
• VIPPERloids are also sometimes referred to as Choukaloid (釣果ロイド, lit. Baitloid or Prankloid), however Choukaloids also cover general prank characters that were not made on VIP@2ch like Mako Sorane.
