11. Adjusting the Pitch (attaching vibrato and portamento vocal expressions)

11-1. Adjusting the pitch using the Pitch Editor

In UTAU, you can adjust the pitch bend (attaching vocal expressions like e.g. portamento, vibrato, sob etc) with the Pitch Editor.

Opening the Pitch Editor

Verify that the "Mode2" button is not pressed in the upper right of UTAU's main screen, select only one note to perform pitch adjustments, then select "Edit" 「編集」 -> "Region" 「選択範囲」 -> "Pitch Editor" 「ピッチエディタ」, or press Ctrl + T. (You can also open it by right-clicking the note, then selecting "Pitch" 「ピッチ」.)

※ If the "Mode2" button is pressed, the Mode2 Portamento and Vibrato Setting screen opens instead -> 12-2. Opening the Mode2 Configuration screen

The "+" button enlarges the Pitch Editor screen horizontally (in the time axis direction), the "-" button reduces it.
※ The time is displayed in 0.1 second units on the top of the Pitch Editor screen.

2

Vertical (pitch) direction Enlarge/Reduce button

The "+" button enlarges the Pitch Editor screen vertically (in the pitch direction), the "-" button reduces it.
※ One unit of the gray horizontal scale corresponds to a half-tone (100 cents).
※ As there is in UTAU no Pitch Bend Sensivity (the ability to set the width of the pitch changes) like the one that comes with VOCALOID2, you can either greatly expand the screen vertically or interact with the Text Input (14) if you want to set fine pitch changes.

3 Straight Line Tool button Links the start and the end of the selected (red) control points with a straight line.
4

2 staged (S shaped) curve Tool button

Links the start and the end of the selected (red) control points with a 2-staged (S-shaped) line.

5

Return to nominal value Tool button

Returns the pitch of the selected (red) control points to the nominal value (0 cent).

6

Ruffle Tool button

Ruffles the pitch to produce a vibrato.
When pressing the left "<" button once, the selected region becomes a half wave; each time the button is pressed the period is shortened (the number of waves increases.)
When pressing the right ">" button once, the red control points make a zig-zag shape with a very short period; each time the button is pressed the cycle becomes more complex.
※ The amplitude of the pitch can be selected with the pull-down on the right, but please note that the variation is in 10 cents units (e.g. 6 corresponds to 60cent).

7

Individual control points Moving Mode button

In this mode, control points move one by one when dragged regardless of selected or unselected. (Default mode)
8

All the selected part Moving Mode button

In this mode, all the selected control points move up and down with the same pitch amplitude when dragged.
9

Mountain-shaped adjustment Mode 1 button

In this mode, dragging any of the selected control points up and down forms a mountain shape where both the base and the summit are angular.

10

Mountain-shaped adjustment Mode 2 button

In this mode, dragging any of the selected control points up and down forms a mountain shape where the base is angular and the summit is rounded.

11

Mountain-shaped adjustment Mode 3 button

In this mode, dragging any of the selected control points up and down forms a mountain shape where both the base and the summit are rounded.

12

Mountain-shaped adjustment Mode 4 button

In this mode, dragging any of the selected control points up and down forms a mountain shape where the base is rounded and the summit is angular.

13

Freehand adjustment Mode button

In this mode, you may draw a free-hand pitch curve by dragging on the Pitch Editor screen.
※ As the control points are linked by straight lines, it is in fact a pseudo-curve.

14 Text Output button

Displays a text screen where are printed all the control points pitch values, in 0.1cent units.
※ The pitch can also be finely modified in 0.1cent units by manually adjusting the numerical values printed on the text screen.

15 Control points

Control points are displayed in blue when unselected, and in red when dragged and selected.
With a 120 tempo, there is about 100 displayed points per quarter-note. The number of displayed control points depends on the note length and the tempo.

16 Reset button Returns the pitch of all the control points on the Pitch Editor screen to the reference value (0 cent).
17 OK button

When the pitch adjustment are settled, press "OK" to close the Pitch Editor screen.

18 Cancel button

To cancel the pitch adjustments, please "Cancel" to close the Pitch Editor screen.

  • The blue vertical line on the Pitch Editor screen is the preutterance, the red vertical line is the start position of the right blank area, and the pink area shows the consonant fixed range.
